Austin Gives Back

You hear it in the rooms all the time, you must give it away to keep it. That seems absurd and untrue. How can you keep anything if you give it away? This is one of the four paradoxes you will hear often in the rooms if you stick around long enough. When it comes to love, compassion, happiness, truth, and respect, you can’t keep it unless you give it away. First the “It” in the giving away part is the service and the second “it” in the keeping part is the humility. So why would someone give away service to gain humility? Therefore, humility is the foundation of this personal power which rests in the fact that we are not pretending to be anything or anyone we are not. Seems like just the thing we need to keep our ego in check, which is important for addicts in recovery.

What you can do

Everyone knows one of the best things for an addict is a sober addict helping them out. So, let’s step outside the box for a minute. During the month of October, hundreds of sober addicts around the Austin area got together to start a food drive. Furthermore, they committed to donating extra food around the sober houses in Austin to give back to the Austin Food Bank. This food drive was led and organized by The Austin Alumni Alliance which is an organization combining the alumni coordinators from surrounded treatment centers in the area. The combined efforts unify the sober addicts to reach out and help the community in a bigger way. Donation boxes were set up at local recovery hangouts around the Austin area, and the food started pouring in. After a 30-day collection period Austin Alumni Alliance had collected 713 Pounds of Food! That’s 594 Meals!

The holiday season is all about giving. It reminds us to be thankful for what we have and to give back to those in need. Surrounded by friends and family, it’s easy to feel a strong sense of gratitude. Recovering addicts are taught to give back whenever they can, practicing this as often as possible. Humility helps us to make the right choices. Our motives move from constantly seeking “what’s in it for me” to “what can I do for my fellow”. Being freed from the chains of selfishness we can follow a path that leads to happiness, joy, freedom, and fulfillment. Our very lives depend upon this change of motivation.
